All bicycles are welcome at the Durango BMX track for practice and learning to ride. The track is currently open at all times and everyone must help take care of it .

Don't be shy! BMX racers and fans are friendly people. Please ask any racer or parent if you have any questions or need help getting started. Everyone with a good attitude is welcome at Durango BMX.

Eventually you will want to get a style of BMX bike that is normally used for ABA racing. BMX bikes are available at several bike shops in Durango, by mail order, or on the Internet. It's not necessary to spend a lot of money to try BMX racing (see if a friend will let you borrow a bike to try it out).Check the bulletin board on the timing building at the BMX track for used bicycles and equipment.

Regardless of what kind of bicycle you use, it must be safe and ready:

1. Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle bolts and stem bolts.
2. All reflectors must be removed for safety purposes.
3. Pegs, kickstands, and any other safety hazards must be removed.
4. Your bike needs the three required pads (a) covering the crossbar of your handlebars (b) covering the handlebar stem (or gooseneck) and (c) on the top tube of your frame.
5. You'll also need a number plate for racing. We can supply you with a temporary plate when you sign up.

Next, there are certain requirements for what you will need to wear in order to race. When you first start out racing BMX, think cheap. You don't need a fancy uniform - jeans and a long sleeve shirt will do.

1. Long sleeve shirt. (short sleeved shirts may be worn, however elbow/arm guards MUST be worn).
2. Long pants. (shorts may be worn, however full knee/shin guards MUST be worn).
3. A helmet, preferably a "full-face" style.
4. Sneakers are just fine. DO NOT wear any type of open-toe shoe or sandal.

It is the racer's and their parents' responsibility to check the condition of their bicycles and equipment. The operators of the Durango BMX track, the City of Durango, and other persons ARE NOT responsible for checking your equipment.

Bring your water bottle! It's extremely important for racers (and spectators) to keep hydrated. There is no drinking or toilet facilities at the BMX track so come prepared. Soda pop DOES NOT hydrate your body. PARENT HINT: A shade umbrella is a good idea for afternoon activities.

All racers must join the ABA in order to race or to train using the starting gate. This membership provides certain levels of insurance (check with the ABA) and supports BMX racing.

You can join at the track on race day or you can get an application through the Internet link below. Please print the application, fill it out and bring it to the track and we'll process it for you. If under 18, your parent must accompany you and sign the waiver.

TRACK RULES.................
1. Please do not ride on the track when it is wet.
2. Bicycles only, unauthorized motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited on the track and will ruin it.
3. Do not stand or ride on any of the berms (the backside of the dirt pushed up to make the banked turns and other track features). These dirt mounds are actually quite fragile and can be ruined.
4. Help out! Taking care of the BMX track requires lots of raking and other help. All racers and parents are asked to help out. No one is paid to do this, we are all volunteers.
5. Take care of the little guys and rookies! If you're an experienced rider and you can see that someone needs help, make them feel welcome to our track and program. Be friendly in explaining track etiquette to new riders and spectators.
6. Pick up trash even if it's not yours. Please be especially careful about bringing any glass containers to the track. Broken glass pops tires! Likewise with other sharp stuff.
7. Please bring water. Hydrating is important!!
8. Vandalism, graffiti, and theft SUCK! Report any such abuse to your track and facilities.
9. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are strictly prohibited at all times at the Durango BMX track by all persons regardless of age.

Riding and all activities at Durango BMX have inherent risk. All such risk is the sole responsibility of riders and/or their parents.

The Durango BMX track is only possible because the City of Durango allowed us use of the land. Please be friendly to and respectful of everyone in the area and help us show that BMX is a worthwhile use of the area for Durango's kids.
